How to Start Strength Training (Without Feeling Lost)

Strength training is one of the most effective things you can do for your long-term health — building muscle, improving bone density, boosting metabolism, and supporting mental wellbeing, between others.

But for many women, especially those new to the gym, it can feel intimidating. Where do you start? What do you lift? How heavy?

Here is a simple framework to get you moving in the right direction.

Start with the basics

Before anything else, focus on learning the fundamental movement patterns:

  • Squat — sitting down and standing up under load
  • Hinge — bending at the hips (think deadlift)
  • Push — pressing weight away from your body
  • Pull — drawing weight towards your body
  • Carry — moving with weight in your hands

Master these and you have the foundation for almost every exercise you will ever do.

Prioritise form over weight

The most common mistake beginners make is adding weight too quickly. Start lighter than you think you need to. Focus entirely on moving well — controlled, deliberate, full range of motion.

Your muscles will still work hard. And you will protect yourself from injury.

Be consistent before you are intense

Three sessions per week, done consistently for three months, will produce far better results than six sessions a week for three weeks followed by burnout.

Consistency is the only variable that truly matters in the early stages.

You do not need to figure this out alone

A personalised programme removes all the guesswork. You know exactly what to do, in what order, with what weights — and someone is checking your progress and adjusting as you go.

That is exactly what BOUDICA is built for.
